The Three Foundations
The Three Foundations
A Construction Manual for Personal Philosophy
You are not beginning with a blank page.
You already have beliefs. Standards. Boundaries. Rules about how life works and how you are supposed to live.
The question is: did you choose them?
The Three Foundations is a guided workbook for examining and deliberately constructing the foundation beneath your life.
You will work through three questions:
I BELIEVE — What do you believe is true about reality, human nature, suffering, freedom, meaning, and yourself?
I UPHOLD — What standards will govern your participation in relationships, communities, work, and the world?
I WILL NOT — What lines will you personally refuse to cross, even when crossing them would be easier, profitable, or socially acceptable?
This is not about creating an impressive list of values.
It is about finding out what you actually believe, what you actually uphold, and what you are actually willing to refuse.
You will examine the foundations you inherited. Test them against your life. Identify contradictions. Refine your answers. Then you will construct a final Foundation Document—a clear statement of what you believe, what you uphold, and what you will not do.

Because a life built on foundations you never consciously chose is still built on something.
The question is whether you are willing to find out what.

Build what you stand on.
