Trash-Brand Billy's "Totally True Tale" of Teenage Tribulations, Vol. 1, 1990

It's 1990, and thirteen year old Billy is trying to survive junior high, busted shoes, bad grades, family secrets, and the general humiliation of being a teenager.

But life at home is becoming harder to understand.

His father is increasingly convinced that the CIA, Big Brother, and mysterious forces are watching him. His mother is hiding secrets of her own. Strange phone calls, empty bottles, old suspicions, and a complicated family history begin to reveal a reality that Billy is too young to fully recognize.

So he does what any smart mouthed, pop culture obsessed teenager might do. He tries to make sense of it all through movies, music, cartoons, video games, crude jokes, wild imagination, and the unreliable logic of adolescence.

Set against the unmistakable backdrop of 1980s pop culture and the opening days of 1990, Trash Brand Billy's "Totally True Tale" of Teenage Tribulations, Vol. 1 is a darkly funny coming-of-age story filled with dysfunctional family life, teenage confusion, uncomfortable truths, and moments that are as absurd as they are painful.

Told through Billy's sharp, chaotic, and often hilarious perspective, the story explores what happens when a child begins to realize that the adults around him may not understand the world any better than he does.

Nostalgic, raw, irreverent, and unexpectedly moving, this is a story about growing up inside a family where truth is complicated, memory is imperfect, and sometimes humor is the only way to survive the things you don't yet understand.

Welcome to Billy's world.

The story is totally true. Well... mostly.

EPUB review

I just finished reading the epub. It uploaded easily to my Kindle and was formatted beautifully. The story reads like a memoir told in the voice of a teenager. Billy struggles with insecurities brought on by pimples, a changing voice and extremely complicated family issues. He and his two brothers are interesting and relatable characters. They watch a lot of bad tv shows and argue. Growing up in a home with four siblings I could relate to their fighting and love/hate relationship. Billy is the main POV throughout the story, although contributing authors, Richard and Diana, each lend a unique voice in their respective chapters. The parents in this story are pretty heavily flawed, but there were moments I was sympathetic to both of their struggles. I’d recommend this book to teens between the ages of 14-19. It’s a well told little story with plenty of show and not tell.

Thanks, Kristina! It's awesome that you could relate to the brothers relationship. I'm glad you enjoyed the book. I'll be sure to pass your compliments to Diana and Richard.

ARC Reader Review

A preview for the digi book was posted in my YA Facebook group. The cover image caught my attention, as did the description of the story. While some of the subject matter is more mature, it’s delivered through the POV of a thirteen year old boy, which eases the delivery. The author has an interesting sense of humor. It appears in some odd or more serious situations but it works. I found the plot to be engaging and the characters to be believable. The story moved quickly, especially with the sound effects and noise buttons. I recommend this book.

Thanks for reading and reviewing, Drew. I grew up watching re-reruns of MASH and All in the Family. Both of those TV shows are loaded with misplaced humor. I think that's where much of it comes from. I'm glad you liked the book!

Crazy story. Thumbs up

I was an advanced reader for the digital book. I read it on my laptop. The book had some serious subject matter but it was also a lot of fun. The sound effects were a nice touch and not overbearing. My 16 year old is reading it in the other room and seems to be enjoying it. I breezed through this in about 2 days. Loved the 80's nostalgia to.
