House Mirajin is a stole shaped by shifting tides, woven like the walls of a forgotten underwater palace.

Construction

House of Mirajin is a pointed stole worked from tip to tip.

Its design is built around a composition of repeating ogival motifs, that are arranged across the stole much like decorative tiles: they cluster at both ends, flow along the edges in a gently undulating rhythm, and meet again in the centre to create a more intricate focal panel.

The body of the piece is deliberately quieter for contrast, but far from plain or boring: it’s decorated with small “bubbles” and gentle ripples, underlined by the use of color in Echo knitting.

This stole does not require advanced skills or difficult techniques, but needs some attention, because the repeats are quite large. Carefully placed stitch markers help keep the knitting experience easier, so I highly recommend not to skip them!

3-Color Echo Knitting

This stole is worked using a three-color variation of my Echo Knitting technique.

The original version of Echo Knitting alternates two colors on a garter stitch base, changing color on every row. For this shawl, I introduced a third color, which unexpectedly simplified the process, because it removes the need for any back-and-forth stitch manipulation and all rows are simply knitted.

Each row is worked using just one color in sequence, and the colorwork is achieved simply slipping some stitches, creating vertical (and curved) lines almost effortlessly.

Sizes: One size.

Finished measurements: Length approx 200 cm / 50”; width 45 cm / 18”.

Yarn

Le Moire Yarn Rune (100% superwash Merino wool, 400 m [437.5 yds] / 100g skeins)

C1: col. Valchiria (dark blue) approx. 360 m [394 yds].

C2: col. Cinderella (light blue) approx. 360 m [394 yds].

C3: col. Ursula (light grey, speckled) approx. 360 m [394 yds].

Note on yarn substitution: Please choose three fingering weight yarns in 3 contrasting colors. This design works better in solid, tonal or lightly speckled colors.

Needles

One 80 cm / 32” circular needle (or straight needles) in size needed to obtain the tension you like for your yarn.

Suggested needle size: 3.5 / 4 US.

Notions

2 markers A, 5 markers B, 5 markers C, 4 markers D.

Tapestry needle to weave in ends.

Gauge

23 stitches and 41 rows = 10x10 cm (4”) in 3-color garter stitch (explained in the pattern), measured after blocking.

Note: Gauge is not critical for this project; it’s more important to obtain a fabric that drapes well. A different gauge, though, may affect final measurements and yardage used.
