Sonata ab. 8 by Clement Thime, or Clemens Thieme (1631–1668), displays remarkable Trombetta parts for such early repertoire. Thieme's apparent associations with Heinrich Schütz are musically evident. This performing edition offers clear parts with unified bar numbers and practical page turns. The edition is based on the manuscripts held in Uppsala University Library Universitetsbibliotek, Carolina Rediviva (S-Uu) Instr. mus. i hs. 9:4, shelf mark IMHS 009:004.

'Sonat ab. 8. 2. Violini. 2 Trombetti e viol di Braccio di Sign: Clement Thime.’ ['2 Viol 2 Clarin 4 Bracc' shown elsewhere]

Clemens Thieme (1631–1668) was born near Dresden and was one of the choirboys that went to Copenhagen with Heinrich Schütz in 1642. After further instrumental studies in Dresden, Schütz helped Thieme to secure a position in Zeitz, where he would eventually become Konzertmeister. Many of Thieme’s surviving compositions are preserved in the Düben Collection (an extensive collection of musical manuscripts compiled in Stockholm by members of the Düben family, most notably Gustav Düben the elder (c.1628–1690). The collection was donated to the Uppsala University Library in 1732 by his son, Anders von Düben).

A chaconne begins at bar 104. This popular dance-inspired ground bass (ostinato) pattern also appears in Schütz’s Es steh Gott auf (1647). It seems likely that Thieme was influenced by Schütz, who had been influenced by Monteverdi [‘notably the closing section of Schütz’s Es steh Gott auf (1647), which by the composer’s own admission was based on Monteverdi’s Zefiro torna, but with a modulating ostinato pattern.’ Silbiger, Alexander, ‘Chaconne ‘, Oxford Music Online - Accessed 22/01/2021 (Chapter 5, ‘Germany’)].
