The Princess and the Pea

The Princess and the Pea

Twenty mattresses, twenty quilts, and one small green pea.

Prince Frederik wants to marry a real princess, but how can he tell who is real? He travels the whole world and comes home with no answer. Then, on a wild and stormy night, there is a knock at the city gate. Outside stands a girl soaked from head to toe, who says she is Princess Sofia.

She doesn't look like a princess at all. But the wise old Queen has a plan. She puts one tiny pea on the bed, then piles twenty mattresses and twenty feather quilts on top. In the morning, everyone asks Sofia how she slept.

This lively retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale shows young readers never to judge someone by how they look. It ends with the Moral of the Story and Think and Talk questions for reading at home or in class.
