Program Note:
In the summer of 2017, Portugal experienced a true inferno of flames. The human and environmental tragedy was immense, leaving behind haunting images and deep grief.
Melodically, the piece draws upon the ancient Dies Irae chant — a timeless symbol of judgment and mortality revisited by countless composers.
Rhythmically, it incorporates Morse code derived from words tied to the tragedy (SIRESP, GNR, FOGO), evoking the communication failures of that fateful time.
The band emerges as a living force battling the fire, leading to a final moment of renewal — birdsong rising from the burnt wood.
Premiered at the Casa da Música (Sala Suggia) during the VIII International Composition Competition of the Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa, conducted by Francisco Ferreira, the work was awarded 1st Prize.
