Trans allyship for counsellors

5 things you need to do before advertising yourself as a trans ally

Are you a counsellor who wants to advertise yourself as a trans ally?

You may be wondering whether to tick the "Gender dysphoria" or "LGBT issues" box on your directory profile, or you might already consider yourself an ally and be working with the community. Either way, it's vitally important that anyone advertising as an ally to the community does so with awareness of what's required of allies in today's hostile climate.

I'm Josiah

I'm a counsellor, and the founder of Off Beat Therapy; a counselling service for those who feel uncomfortable or unwelcome at traditional therapy services. I specialise in working with trans clients, drag performers and queer entertainers.

I have over fifteen years experience delivering trans awareness workshops, and working with the trans community. All my workshops are taught from lived experience: by the community, about the community.

Course content

Through video based lessons and interactive activities, this course addresses the following objectives:

  • Evaluate allyship from your own perspective and from a trans client’s perspective
  • Consider the ethics of advertising as an ally
  • Explore ‘readiness’ to do this work and identify areas of necessary learning
  • Recentre your practice on the needs of the community
