Optio

A big thank you to Turtlepurl for her gorgeous yarn, Striped Turtle Toes! Shown in Dream Room (blue) and Nano (orange).

In almost every episode of Time Team, the excavation veers off in an unexpected direction. Decisions are sometimes made on the fly, causing the team to change its tactics midstream.

These socks also let you change direction halfway through, making this (almost) like two patterns in one. After knitting the ribbed cuff and heel increases, you are faced with a decision: does the triangle of increases sit over the heel, or the instep? Directions are provided for both options, allowing you to change it up as you like.

Designed to play nicely with self-striping yarn, these socks knit up surprisingly fast and are suitable for first-time socks knitters.

The Aston Project was named in honour of Prof. Mick Aston, a regular member of Channel Four’s Time Team. As I watched episode after episode of Mick wearing all sorts of stripy jumpers, gloves and hats, the concept for the project came to me: sock patterns made just for self-striping yarn!

About sizing: the stitch counts for the three available sizes are 64, 72, and 80 sts. The smallest size fits a 7.5-8-inch diameter foot nicely.
