Salary Packaging Calculator for Health and Not-for-Profit Workers (Australia, Excel)
How much more will you take home if you salary package? Enter your salary, who you work for and what you want to package. The workbook shows your take-home pay with and without packaging, the tax you save each year, and the reportable fringe benefits amount that will appear on your income statement.
Built for employees of public benevolent institutions, health promotion charities, public and not-for-profit hospitals and public ambulance services in Australia.
What it works out for you:
- The most you can package under your employer's FBT cap ($30,000 grossed-up for PBIs and health promotion charities, about $15,900 of benefits; $17,000 grossed-up for hospitals and ambulance services, about $9,010), plus the separate meal entertainment and venue hire cap ($5,000 grossed-up, about $2,650)
- Take-home pay with and without packaging, per year and per pay
- Annual tax saved (income tax, Medicare levy and Medicare levy surcharge), on 2026-27 resident rates
- Your reportable fringe benefits amount (taxable value x 1.8868), as shown on your income statement
- What that amount does to your income tests: the Medicare levy surcharge, HELP and other study loan repayments, and the income used for family payments such as the Child Care Subsidy (where only 53% counts for these employers)
- Your provider's admin fees, which you enter, taken from pre-tax or after-tax pay
- A plain-English summary of your result, and a Checks tab that confirms everything adds up
Why it matters: packaging lowers your taxable income, but the reportable amount is added back for several income tests. In the included example ($85,000 salary at a PBI, packaging $18,550), the tax saved is $5,974. But the reportable amount of $35,000 lifts repayment income, so the compulsory HELP repayment roughly doubles (from $2,321 to $4,773), and income for MLS purposes ($101,346) sits just under the $105,000 singles threshold. The workbook shows all of it, so you can see the real gain before you sign up.
