Enter your crypto trades. Get the three numbers myTax asks for: Total current year capital gains (label H), Net capital gain (label A) and Net capital losses carried forward (label V), for every tax year from 2017-18 to 2026-27.

For Australians with a modest number of trades (up to 500 rows) who don't want to pay for a crypto tax subscription every year.

What it works out for you

  • First-in, first-out (FIFO) lot matching, done by formulas (no macros). Each sale, swap, spend or gift is matched to the oldest coins of that asset you still held.
  • The gain or loss on every disposal, kept separate for each purchase it used, because each coin is a separate CGT asset.
  • The 50% CGT discount for coins held at least 12 months, using the ATO's rule (the day you bought and the day of the trade don't count). A sale that uses older and newer coins is split into its discount and no-discount parts.
  • Capital losses applied in the ATO's order: current-year losses first, then losses from earlier years, then the discount. Losses go against gains with no discount first, which the ATO says gives the greatest benefit. Unused losses carry forward to the next year automatically.
  • Staking rewards, airdrops and other crypto income: shown as ordinary income at market value when received, and that value becomes the coins' cost base.
  • Swaps (crypto for crypto), spending crypto, gifts, transfers between your own wallets (not a CGT event) and lost or stolen crypto.
  • The personal use asset rule, applied narrowly as the ATO does: only for crypto spent on personal items, and only if it cost $10,000 or less. Losses on personal use assets are never allowed.
  • What you still hold, by asset, at its cost base.
  • A plain-English summary of your year.
  • 12 automatic checks, including: you never sell more than you held at the time; every dollar of cost is either used or still held; every total reconciles.

Also inside: a filled-in example (20 trades) to learn from, then type over it. Optional rows for other CGT events (shares, property) so the year totals match your whole return.

The 1 July 2027 CGT changes: disposals from 1 July 2027 are flagged, not calculated. The Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 1) Act 2026 replaces the 50% discount with indexation for gains accruing from 1 July 2027, and the ATO says part of the method (the optional apportionment method) is still being developed. The workbook explains the changes as the ATO describes them and reminds you to record each coin's value at 1 July 2027.

Works in: Microsoft Excel 2016 or later (Windows or Mac), Excel for the web, and LibreOffice. Google Sheets isn't tested.

Not covered: trading crypto as a business, DeFi lending, liquidity pools and wrapping (explained in the notes, not calculated), choosing specific coins instead of FIFO, companies, trusts, SMSFs and foreign residents, and the tax payable on your gain.

Built and checked by a CPA. Every formula tested against a separate calculation.

Every rule was checked against ato.gov.au on 24 October 2026, with sources listed in the file.
