1 x Knitting Pattern for Lady Thistledown's Quill

Knitting a big, cosy scarf is just like knitting a big, cosy hug. And Lady Thistledown's Quill is the perfect winter scarf because it's certainly big, certainly cosy and definitely like being wrapped in a big, cosy hug!

Tapered like a quill with twisted stitch 'rachis' (spine of a feather), this aran scarf's design is inspired by a long standing pen pal friendship that you can read about on my Substack (the link is at the end of the pattern).

It's a beautifully simple and relaxing pattern to knit with a mix of stocking stitch broken up by my abstract lacework thistle motif. It also has a neat iCord edge to finish the scarf off beautifully. But don't panic! It's integrated so you work it as you go!

The pattern is worked in two identical sections to ensure that the motif travels in the same direction on each side. These are then joined to create this gorgeously stylish and generously sized scarf.

You'll need a maximum of 800m of aran yarn to knit Lady Thistledown's Quill. But if the scarf feels too long you can reduce the length by 40cm by omitting a pattern repeat on both sections.

And as it's knitted in two halves it's a great project to pop into your bag for trips to the cafe or wherever your adventures take you.

This is also a very special pattern for me as it is the fourth of my charity patterns. Designed in honour of my Mum who passed in 2023. I donate 50% of my charity pattern's sales proceeds to MacMillan Cancer Support that provides specialist nursing and support to patients and their families. So whether you're knitting this pattern for yourself or as a gift, you know that you're also helping give others a big hug too!

Happy Knitting!
