PREFACE OF THE BOOK
The text is written for students in higher institution of learning, individual, business investors, lecturers, researchers, organizations and governments who intends to embrace business research as a process and as a tool for solving business problems.
The text is prepared in such a way that students in Behavioural Sciences particularly Management Sciences: Accounting, Business Management, Economics, Marketing Banking, and Finance will find it useful in conducting successful research and in data analysis as one of the major University requirements for obtaining a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.).
The idea behind this text was prompted by the need to provide concrete reasons why business research is pertinent and indispensable to those who want to start a business or succeed in their present businesses.
Based on my many years of intensive study, experience and supervision of student’s researches and theses, I have been able to make this text very simple and concise and simple English language with a step-by-step guide to the student-researchers, business investors and business consultants to carry out successful research and statistical computations of data with less or no supervision. Simple and real-life illustrations and examples have been judiciously selected in the field of business to stimulate thoughts of the reader, students and business individuals towards developing their skills in computations, data analysis, and decision making.
For the fact that business research needs data collection and analysis (especially, when data are voluminous) to arrive at prudent and intelligent decisions, the book has treated step-by-step use of computerized software Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel application software in analyzing business and economic data.
Many sensitive research topics in modern business situations and problems (with detailed illustrations) have been judiciously selected to stimulate students’ understanding.
The text is arranged in chapters. Each chapter begins with a statement of learning objective. Chapter one presents the nature and concepts of business research. Chapter two examines business research versus operations research; the relevance of operations research. Chapter three describes the management tools and techniques used in business research methods. Chapter four deals with various business research designs, Chapter five elucidates the research proposal, which is needed as contents of chapter one. Chapter six presents the review of related literature which is needed as contents of chapter two. Chapter seven and eight appraise the research methodology and methods of data collection. Chapter nine involves the presentation of statistical data in business research methods. Chapter ten discusses on measures of central tendency in business research methods (business statistics) with computation. Chapter eleven deliberates on measures of dispersion in business research methods (Business statistics) with computation. Chapter twelve discusses the inferential statistical tools and techniques used in business research methods with practical illustrations and computation (Covariance, ANOVA, regression, correlation, t-test, Chi-square, MANOVA, Spearman Rank correlation, etc.). Chapter thirteen and fourteen describe practically the computerized data analysis in business research methods with computerized data analysis in business research using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Electronic Spreadsheet Management System. Chapter fifteen contains data analysis and interpretation of results. Chapter sixteen describes how to write the summary, conclusion, recommendations, and suggestions for further studies and implication to the study. Chapter seventeen asserts the project/thesis (dissertation) prefatory section (dedication, acknowledgments, abstract, reference, etc). Chapter eighteen, which is the last chapter, focuses on the relevance of business research to lecturers, business investors, and national development.
