The adult matters more than the sheet. A kid who gets two minutes with someone who is glad to see them every morning will usually try harder than a kid with a perfect point system and no one to show it to.

What's included:

• A mentor quick start: who to pick, how to set goals, how long it takes

• Morning check in and afternoon check out scripts in plain words

• Elementary point sheet

• Secondary point sheet by class period

• A simple progress graph to look at together on Fridays

How I'd use it:

Pick a mentor who is not the main teacher and who likes this kid. That part matters more than anything on the page. Make the first two weeks winnable, send a copy home, and graph it every Friday with the student. Editable Word file included so you can put in the student's own goals.

Celebrate effort out loud at check out, even on a low point day. A kid who earned 60 percent and still walked into your office is doing something hard. When the student hits the goal most days for a few weeks, start fading: fewer check ins, the student rating themselves, then a simple Friday chat. The graph makes that decision easy to see for the team and for the family.

Who it's for: Teachers, counselors, mentors, and administrators. Grades K 12.

What you download: one printable PDF, 4 pages, US Letter, plus an editable Word file so you can type in it.
