Home Living Picture Strips: Daily Living Visual Supports for Teens and Adults, Ages 14 to 21
These home living picture strips are student facing visual supports for 10 daily routines, each broken into 4 or 5 numbered steps with a picture and a few words per step, written for teens and young adults.
Why I made this: My work task picture strips get used at job sites every day, and families kept asking for the same thing at home: brushing teeth, a shower, laundry, packing a bag. These strips look and sound grown up, so older students are willing to use them.
What’s included:
• A teacher how to page: print, laminate, cut, post, and fade
• 10 picture strips, two per page: Brush my teeth, Take a shower, Get ready in the morning, Make my bed, Wash dishes by hand, Take out the trash, Start a load of laundry, Fold and put away clothes, Pack my bag, and Clean my room
• A blank strip for the student’s own routine
• An "I did each step" self check sheet
• A note for families
How I use it: We practice a routine at school with the strip, then I send the strip home with the family note so home and school use the same steps. As the student gets it, I cut the strip down to the hard steps.
Skills covered:
• Following a multi step routine
• Personal hygiene and getting ready
• Kitchen, laundry, and bedroom chores
• Self checking and independence
Who it is for: Special education, life skills, and transition teachers, paras, and families of students in grades 6 to 12 and 18 to 21 programs.
