Five Books. Four Companies. One Island.
In 1942 the United States Marine Corps took its first Black recruits in a hundred and sixty-seven years and trained them apart, at a camp in the pines called Montford Point. Three years later the Black Marines of the depot and ammunition companies went ashore on Iwo Jima. They were sent to carry. On that island there was no rear.
The Black Sands of Suribachi follows the 8th Ammunition Company and the 33rd, 34th and 36th Marine Depot Companies from the gate at Montford Point to the last dawn on the island, and home again.
Prequel: Fall In. Montford Point, 1942: the gate, the drill instructors, and the orders west. Free.
