The 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Estonian), also known as 20. Estnische SS-Freiwilligen-Division, was composed primarily of Estonian volunteers and conscripts fighting under German command during World War II. Formed in 1944 from earlier Estonian SS formations, the division was involved in defensive operations against the advancing Red Army, especially on the Eastern Front. Soldiers typically wore the standard SS runes on the right collar tab, while the left tab was often blank or bore Estonian national motifs in some cases, though unofficially. Their cuff title varied; many wore "Estland" or no cuff title at all, depending on supply and issue. The division was seen by many Estonians as a way to resist Soviet reoccupation rather than a sign of allegiance to Nazi Germany.
