The Horst Wessel Division, officially the 18th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division "Horst Wessel", was a Waffen-SS division formed in 1944, named after Horst Wessel, a Nazi stormtrooper idolized by the regime and author of the Nazi anthem Horst-Wessel-Lied. The division was composed largely of a mix of Volksdeutsche (ethnic Germans) from Hungary, Romania, and the Balkans, as well as a smaller number of German recruits and conscripts.

Initially formed from security and police units operating in the Balkans, the division was not considered elite. It received limited training, was poorly equipped, and suffered from issues of morale and desertion. Its operational history mostly involved rear-area security, anti-partisan operations, and later combat against the advancing Red Army in Hungary and Slovakia.

Uniform-wise, soldiers wore standard Waffen-SS field grey, with SS runes on the collar tab, standard rank insignia, and a "Horst Wessel" cuff title on the sleeve. Due to its late formation and chaotic deployment, the division never achieved the combat reputation of the more experienced SS Panzer divisions.

By early 1945, the division was engaged in desperate defensive actions during the collapse of Nazi Germany and was ultimately destroyed or surrendered in Austria by May 1945. Despite its grandiose name, the division is remembered as one of the more symbolic and politically motivated Waffen-SS formations rather than a tactically effective unit.
