The 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician), also known as 14. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (galizische Nr. 1), was formed in 1943 largely from Ukrainian volunteers from the Galicia region, which was then part of German-occupied Poland. The division was intended to combat Soviet forces and was later renamed the 1st Ukrainian Division of the Ukrainian National Army in 1945 in an attempt to distance it from the SS. It wore the standard SS runes on the right collar tab, while the left collar tab featured a distinctive lion of Galicia emblem. Many soldiers wore a “Galizien” cuff title in silver Gothic script on a black background. The division saw heavy combat on the Eastern Front, notably being nearly destroyed in the Brody Pocket in 1944, and remains controversial due to its associations with the SS and alleged involvement in war crimes.
