Whitewater Rapids Socks

The Whitewater Rapids Socks are inspired by churning river rapids. These socks reflect the water’s turbulence and irregularly-interrupted flow with deliberately twisted elongated stitches offset from each other in a disorderly pattern. No unusual techniques are required to make this visually striking effect!

Pattern Description

These toe-up socks feature a unique surface texture, as well as a rounded short row heel using no-holes short rows and a twisted rib cuff. This pattern requires the knitter to be able to knit a small circumference in the round (either on double-pointed needles or your preferred technique for socks) and clearly explains all techniques required. Within the pattern you will find links to useful video tutorials as well, so the pattern is accessible to an intermediate sock knitter.

Recommended needle sizes: 2.5 mm (US 1.5) and 2.25 mm (US 1).

Yarn Requirements and Sizing

Sizes available: Adult Small (Medium, Large) for foot circumferences of 18 (20.5, 23) cm / 7 (8, 9) inches. The foot length and leg height are adjustable.

The socks require approximately 275 (300, 325) m / 300 (325, 350) yards of fingering weight sock yarn.

The texture used in this pattern works with nearly any colourway, since it stands out on a solid colour, but also pulls out subtle dye details and breaks up pooling.
