The Garibaldi Guards were a regiment of Italian Americans, many of whom spoke nothing but Italian. Their outfits were based on those of the Italian Bersaglieri and they used rank insignia distinct to their unit. They were frequently victims of friendly fire due to hat feathers being the symbol for secessionists in the early war as sides hadn't split into blue and grey yet.
