UNIT 2: SHORT VOWELS {PHONICS 4 Reading}

Welcome to Unit 2 of the PHONICS4Reading program! This program is designed to help students go from “learning to read,” to “reading to learn.” This phonics program provides year-long practice through interactive hands-on activities. This is UNIT 2: Short Vowels.

What Standards & Skills will be Covered in this Unit?

★ Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequence of letters.

★ Blend and segment sounds in single-syllable words.

★ Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (CVC) words.

★ Know and apply phonic and word analysis in decoding words.

★ Associate the short sounds with common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels.

★ Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes).

★ Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

★ Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds (phonemes).
