Sir Julius Benedict (1804–1885) was a German-born British composer, conductor, and pianist. A student of Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Carl Maria von Weber, Benedict became a prominent figure in 19th-century English music. He is best known for his operas, oratorios, and part-songs, and was knighted in 1871 for his contributions to British music.
Originally published in 1869, A Drinking Song is a lively secular part-song. The piece captures the spirit of Victorian conviviality and was popular in glee club and choral settings.
This Brass Quintet adaptation brings Benedict’s boisterous energy to life with bold sounds, rich harmonies, and rhythmic drive - perfect for concerts, community events, or festive occasions. It retains the original’s celebratory tone while giving brass players a chance to shine.
