Wavy
Wavy is a light and airy loose-fitting cowl or snood, perfect for Autumn or Spring when a little more warmth is needed around your neck and shoulders. It is knit in the round at a loose gauge, using the classic Old Shale pattern in 4ply/fingering and silk-mohair laceweight. It is designed to take advantage of the heat trapping properties of silk-mohair yarn, but you could use silk-alpaca or other fluffy laceweight yarn. Wavy can be made to any size, limited only by your yarn quantities, and looks particularly good as a snood to warm your ears as well as your neck.
Materials
Any 4ply/fingering yarn for the edge and body of the cowl and any silk mohair/alpaca laceweight for the contrasting stripes. For yarn quantities, see Finished size section below. The sample shown was knit in:
Yarn A: Debbie Bliss Fine Donegal; 4ply/fingering; 95% Merino wool 5% cashmere; 379 m / 415 yds per 100 g / 3.53 oz; sample used approximately 48 g / 182 m / 199 yds in colour Winter Rose.
Yarn B: Debbie Bliss Angel; lace/2ply; 70% kid mohair, 30% silk; 210 m/ 230 yds per 25g / 0.88 oz; sample used approximately 7 g / 60 m / 66 yds in colour 15003 Grey.
Tension
14 sts and 26 rows = 10 cm / 4” on 5 mm needles in Old Shale pattern in the round after blocking.
Finished size
You can make Wavy in any length you want by repeating the 7-row pattern. The sizes here are for the ribbing and a number of vertical repeats of the pattern.
For a simple short cowl, 32 cm / 12 ¾”, 10 repeats.
For a medium height cowl, 46 cm / 18 ½”, 15 repeats.
For a snood, 59 cm / 23 ½”, 20 repeats.
Three widths are given in the pattern, narrow (77 cm / 30 ¾”), medium (90 cm / 36”), and wide(103 cm / 41 ¼ “), but again you can make the cowl in varying widths.
Finished size of the pink and grey medium height narrow cowl: 46 cm / 18 ½” tall x 77 cm / 30 ¾” in circumference; 6 horizontal repeats, 15 vertical repeats.
