Freak Sweeper - Chaos Synth

Freak Sweeper (Chaos Synth) is the second addition to the LSD series, a collection of software synths, designed entirely within Logic Pro, by Unknown Audio.

About

Freak Sweeper uses the Test Oscillator for its 'Square Freak' voice. This oscillator can be manipulated in various interesting ways, featuring an additional 'Chaos Freak' modulation matrix, designed to take the default voice (which is pretty freaky to begin with) into crazy new territories. 

How It Works

The synth uses the Test Oscillator plugin, with some clever routing, carefully chosen plugins and modulation FX, and further utilising the SMART Controls as a user interface; with each parameter painstakingly finessed for maximum usability, functionality and enjoyment. It is designed to self-oscillate, so that it does not require midi notes to generate sound; although you absolutely can experiment with adding midi data. The SMART Controls provide a GUI for each Synth Voice, allowing you to programme in different patches, but this also makes it playable, which is immensely powerful for making your synth-based music come alive. This can be even more powerful when connected to an external midi keyboard or midi controller. To use the synth, simply download the zip file, unpack it and open the 'Freak Sweeper (Chaos Synth) v2.0.logicx' project file (requires Logic Pro).

Why Use Logic As A Synth?

Logic Pro comes with a variety of synth plugins as standard, designed by teams of actual software developers — so why bother trying to use Logic as a synth in its own right? Well, sometimes it's just nice to have a new toy. That alone can spark the creative impulse and inspire new music. However, the real power behind this approach is the customisation. For a start, you can simply duplicate the Oscillator Voice channels to create as many oscillators as you like (as much as your CPU can handle, anyway!). More than this, you can re-configure the modulation and FX assignments, remove, replace or add plugins to sculpt the behaviours and sonic characteristics of your synth and even design your oscillators and modulators from the ground up. Now, this does have limitations and Logic is not ideally suited to this kind of workflow, requiring a lot of experimentation and micro-adjustments to get the performance and functionality desired — which is why I've made this synth available to you. All the hard work has already been done, so that you can just get started making noise! However, Freak Sweeper can also be used as a learning tool, or as a template to help you start making your own Logic Synth Designs!

This synth is not a standalone product.

It cannot be used as a plugin in any other DAW or software application.

Before opening the project file, it is strongly recommended that you keep the .zip file, or create a copy of the project file to keep as a 'Master' version. The default patches and settings have been carefully designed, not only to be a useful starting point, but also to contain the necessary routing and smart control functionality. By saving a 'Master' copy, you can tweak your Freak Sweeper synth copy to your hearts content, knowing that you can recall the default patch at any time. You can, of course, make as many copies as you like. Saving patches as channel strip settings, or using project 'Alternatives' within these copies, can be a great way to save your own favourite presets.

When first opening the Freak Sweeper project file, you will need to unmute the 'Freak Sweeper' Software Instrument channel to hear the synth.

Capturing the sounds you make with this synth requires pressing REC and printing your performance to an audio channel. All of the routing has been set-up for you in advance, but you will need to make sure that you 'Arm' and record to the 'PRINT' channel. The Print channel's output has been disabled, so you will not hear anything on playback. To hear your recordings, simply create a new audio channel into which you can drag your audio takes.

To view and use the SMART Controls interface, press 'B' or 'COMMAND 3'. Alternatively, you can press '2' to switch to a new window view, which has been set-up as a full-screen view of the SMART Controls interface. Each Oscillator Voice has a different interface/control surface and unfortunately, there is no way to see and interact with both interfaces at the same time. However, by selecting the different instrument channels ('Square Freak' and 'Sine Freak') in the arrange or mixer window, you can switch between the two control surfaces; even while recording.
