Ashes To Scatter - Apocalyptic Synth
Ashes To Scatter is the fourth offering from the LSD series, a collection of software synths, designed entirely within Logic Pro, by Unknown Audio.
About
One of the more subtle synths in this range, Ashes To Scatter reveals itself in waves of foreboding revelation as the progenitor of ethereal and melodic, yet darkly brooding soundscapes. While it may lack the dramatic brutalism of Beast Mode, or the chaotic strangeness of Freak Sweeper, it more than makes up for this with a depth, an intensity and an apocalyptic atmosphere all of its own!
A place for seekers of new textures and musical vistas, Ashes is definitely one for those that like to be immersed in a world of sound. For those of us that are not afraid to peer into the dark abyss!
How It Works
The synth uses the Test Oscillator plugin to generate a sub frequency, with two Tape Delay plugins feeding back to create rich and harmonic overtones. Ashes To Scatter utilises the SMART Controls parameter mapping, to provide you with an intuitive and immersive set of knobs and buttons with which to morph and interact with this synth's hypnotising voices. Because it has been specifically designed to self-oscillate, it does not require midi notes to generate sound; although you absolutely can experiment with adding midi data. The SMART Controls GUI can be opened in a full screen view (by pressing 2 on your keyboard), allowing you to focus fully on making captivating soundscapes. This can be even more powerful when connected to an external midi keyboard or midi controller. To use the synth, simply download the zip file, unpack it and open the 'Ashes To Scatter (Apocalyptic Synth) v2.2.logicx' project file (requires Logic Pro).
Why Use Logic As A Synth?
Logic Pro comes with a variety of synth plugins as standard, designed by teams of actual software developers — so why bother trying to use Logic as a synth in its own right? Well, sometimes it's just nice to have a new toy. That alone can spark the creative impulse and inspire new music. However, the real power behind this approach is the customisation. For a start, you can simply duplicate the Oscillator Voice channels to create as many oscillators as you like (as much as your CPU can handle, anyway!). More than this, you can re-configure the modulation and FX assignments, remove, replace or add plugins to sculpt the behaviours and sonic characteristics of your synth and even design your oscillators and modulators from the ground up. Now, this does have limitations and Logic is not ideally suited to this kind of workflow, requiring a lot of experimentation and micro-adjustments to get the performance and functionality desired — which is why I've made this synth available to you. All the hard work has already been done, so that you can just get started making noise! However, Ashes To Scatter can also be used as a learning tool, or as a template to help you start making your own Logic Synth Designs!

Before opening the project file, it is strongly recommended that you save the zip file, or create a copy of the project file to keep as a 'Master' version. The default patches and settings have been carefully designed, not only to be a useful starting point, but also to contain the necessary routing and smart control functionality. By saving a 'Master' copy, you can tweak your Ashes To Scatter synth copy to your hearts content, knowing that you can recall the default project settings at any time. You can, of course, make as many copies as you like. Saving patches as channel strip settings, or using project 'Alternatives' within these copies, can be a great way to save your own favourite presets.
When first opening the Ashes To Scatter project file, you will need to unmute the 'Ashes To Scatter' instrument channel to hear the oscillators.
Capturing the sounds you make with this synth requires pressing REC and printing your performance to an audio channel. All of the routing has been set-up for you in advance, but you will need to make sure that you 'Arm' and record to the 'PRINT' channel. The Print channel's output has been disabled, so you will not hear anything on playback. To hear your recordings, simply create a new audio channel into which you can drag your audio takes.
To view and use the SMART Controls interface, press 'B' or 'COMMAND 3'. Alternatively, you can press '2' to switch to a new window view, which has been set-up as a full-screen view of the SMART Controls GUI.
Disclaimer: Ashes To Scatter was created in Logic Pro X 10.4.8. This project file may not be backwards compatible with earlier versions of Logic Pro.
