- Notes from the Artist: In February of 2013, Gail travelled to Allahabad, India, to witness the Maha Kumbh Mela, a once-every-12-year Hindu pilgrimage, attended by over 80 million people over a two-month period. This photograph shows some of the 2,000 holy men participating in the initiation to become a Naga. Hindus believe if one takes a bath in the holy waters of the river at the sacred site, one’s sins will be washed away forever. Devotees perform sacred Hindu rituals to free themselves from the cycle of death and rebirth.
