The Maker's Muse

This collection of photographic art, created by member artists of the American Society of Photographers, is on view in the exhibition "The Maker's Muse: Contemporary Photographic Art from the Artists of the American Society of Photographers".

Following a Call for Entries in 2020 for "The Maker's Muse" exhibition, 119 images created by 42 artists were selected. The inaugural exhibition was held in Grapevine, Texas, and the exhibition is now on view in Houston, Texas. 36 artists are represented by 60 works of art.

The Exhibition

In the digital era, “The Maker’s Muse” emphasizes that impact goes beyond an immediate reaction to a fleeting image, and is deepened by a reflective process obtained through time spent viewing the printed image. Additionally, consideration can be given to the techniques employed by each individual artist, who start with the same tool, photography, and complete pieces through varying techniques from digital art to applied materials.

Offering up the seed from which so much is grown, the maker’s muse is the touch of inspiration that spurs thought into action. In this collection from the American Society of Photographers, the elusive muse bestows her gifts differently on each artist, and captures the viewer’s imagination, whether by a strike of lightning from a looming thunderhead, an alien birth, or the delicate bow of a flower.

Resonance: Perspectives Through the Lens

In this collection of fine art photography, the second annual juried exhibition of work by members of the American Society of Photographers, a group of 41 artists share their individual ways of seeing through 51 works of art. As you view this diverse, yet unified, tapestry of images, we invite you to explore what resonates with you.

Art has always been a conversation between the artist and the viewer, each bringing personal experience to the moment. This collection is intriguing not only for the strength of each image and its conversation with you, but also for the dialogue that forms among the images as they resonate with one another. Bold against delicate; abstract against intimate, the contrast invites the viewer to linger, enjoy, and appreciate the connective tissue that binds these artists and the worlds they photograph.

Each photograph here is an act of intention. While some capture the quiet presence of the everyday, others expand the boundaries of imagination. Questions are asked, solace is offered, and space is held for beauty to exist on its own terms. Within this collection, there are images that serve as very personal, visual poetry and others that are joyful celebrations of form. Some are odes to nature, while others delve deep into the human spirit. We invite you to rediscover the world through the eyes of our artists. Curiosity is a delightful compass to guide you. May these images inspire you to pause and explore how they resonate in your heart and mind.
