You are standing at the edge of a year, and everyone around you is already talking about the next one. New resolutions, a fresh start, a better version of yourself by February. None of it lands, because the year that is actually ending is still sitting there, half looked at. You cannot plant into ground you have not cleared.

End Well, Begin Gently treats the turn of the year as compost, not a wall you step over. Before anything new goes in the ground, what finished this year gets named, sorted, and returned to the soil, honestly, so it can feed what comes next instead of quietly rotting under it.

The ritual runs across two sittings, with two ordinary days between them.

Sitting one composts the year. You gather everything ready to return to the soil, sort it into what ended cleanly, what depleted you, and what served you and is now finished, then release it, by water, by burial, by fire, or your own compost, whichever calls to you.

Sitting two turns toward the year ahead. You notice what the composting fed, run what remains through the Spark Test to see what is still alive, let one seed speak for itself, and set intentions, not resolutions, for as many threads as the year ahead actually needs.

You end the ritual having closed the year rather than abandoned it, and you meet the one ahead with soil under it instead of a list scraped together at midnight.

What this is: a self-guided ritual as a downloadable PDF, from The Art of Unravelling. Twenty-six pages, two sittings of roughly an hour and an hour and a half, with two days of ordinary life built into the practice between them. All you need is a candle, something to write with, and a little unhurried time on both ends of the year.

It is for you if: the run-up to New Year's resolutions makes you tired before you have made one, you know this year needs naming before you can leave it behind, and you would rather begin 2027 from something composted than something skipped.
