WHAT YOU GET

One HTML file, 144 KB. Double click it and it opens in your browser. It runs with the internet switched off, and nothing you sing leaves your machine because there is nothing to send it to. Copy it to another computer, keep it on a memory stick, open it in three years. There is no server that can go away and no login that can lock you out of something you already have.

That matters more than it sounds. The usual story with a practice app is that you pay to get in, then pay again inside for the thing you actually wanted, and one day it stops recognising what you bought.

IT FITS YOUR VOICE

Pick bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo, soprano or child, and every exercise transposes to your range. Not three broad settings two octaves apart, seven, and the whole course moves with you. Set your concert pitch as well, because a trainer locked to 440 tells a 442 ensemble they are eight cents sharp forever, and blames them for it.

WHAT IT DOES

It shows you a note. You sing it, or play it on your instrument. It tells you how far off you were in cents, the unit real musicians use.

AND IT ACTUALLY HEARS YOU

That is the part I would rather you check than believe. It ignores the slide at the start of your note and grades only the part you held. It knows which note it asked for, so it can never report you an octave away, which is the failure that makes people stop trusting these tools.

Measured on open singing data, 23,192 voiced frames across 40 tracks, 29 singers and 9 languages, 93.1 percent correct pitch reads. On a separate set of 77 sung notes, 77 of 77 verdicts right. On a real piano, 47 notes, no errors. Below 65 Hz it tells you it cannot hear rather than guessing, which costs it some bass notes, and I would rather you know that now than find out in a lesson.
