  • Notes from the Artist: "A Walk Thru Matera” was taken in Matera, Italy, in 2009. I love travel photography, and I was on a biking trip at the time. One of my favorite things to do is get up early before the town wakes up and go for a walk. It was raining that morning, but I could still hear the alarms going off, the smell of breakfast cooking, the rooster's crowing, and the cars starting to head off to work. It was a beautiful morning, a great day to create some beautiful images. As I walked that morning, I took in the colors of the stone and the doorways, and all the texture on the buildings and cobblestone roads. Notice the cars tucked away in the corners, just big enough to get through the roads. The people look so small compared to the stone buildings. I love how the road comes from the lower left corner and flows through the image to the right side. I wonder where that road goes from there? There are so many little stories going on in this image. Matera is known as the City of Caves, it is also a Unesco World Heritage site. I try to communicate peacefulness and thought through my art. I want the viewer to feel and see the forms, shapes, textures, and color; let their imagination take them there.
