Most guitarists who say they know Dorian sound exactly like they’re playing natural minor. That’s because they learned it as “the C major scale starting on D.” It’s correct, and it’s no use when you’re holding a guitar.

This book starts somewhere else. Dorian is minor with one note changed. In A, that’s F# instead of F. If you can hear that note, find it, and put it in the right place, you can play Dorian. Everything in the book is built around doing those three things.

It also covers what most mode books skip: where Dorian actually works, where it clashes, and how to comp in it, not just solo.

What’s inside:

  • A one-note test that tells you whether Dorian fits any progression
  • Why Dorian goes to the IV chord, and the two notes that make it work
  • The chords that say Dorian, chords in fourths, and how to keep one chord interesting for sixteen bars
  • Four one-octave patterns that run from root to root, so you always know where home and the F# are
  • Ten soloing rules in place of licks, each one built to fix a specific habit
  • The minor blues trap, and the one-note fix
  • Modal jazz, funk and Latin, and rock and pop: the chords, the comping and the soloing for each
  • Twelve vamps to play over, with tempos and feels, plus a template for writing your own
  • Dorian in all twelve keys

What isn’t inside: licks, transcriptions, full-neck box charts, or a lecture on how modes are derived.

Everything is in A, so the open A string gives you a free drone. Every diagram uses the same colour code, with the root in black and the Dorian note outlined, so you can see what matters before you read a word.
