A structured literacy, Science-of-Reading-aligned teaching manual — 46 systematic phonics lessons guiding a child through beginning reading, spelling, or both together, suitable for young beginners, older struggling readers, homeschoolers, and dyslexia/SEN intervention.

This is the Level 1 Teaching Manual with the free Level 1 resources — the complete lesson-by-lesson guide for teaching Reading Made Simple Level 1. It's designed to work alongside our decodable reading books (Tom Stories for younger beginners, or Jack Stories for older, late-reading pupils aged 8+), and suits three types of learner:

  • The young child just beginning — taking their first steps in both reading and spelling together
  • The older, late-reading child (8+) — building the same secure phonics foundation, in a way suited to an older learner, using the Jack Stories
  • The young reader not yet ready to write — who can follow the reading thread alone, without the spelling and writing side, until they're ready to pick up a pencil

(If your child can already read and only needs a spelling and writing programme, please see our separate Level 1 Worksheets pack instead — this manual is designed for pupils learning to read, with or without spelling alongside it.)

Reading Made Simple is fully synthetic, systematic, and multisensory, breaking learning into small incremental steps with constant built-in review — removing as much mental overload as possible. Technical language is kept to a minimum throughout.

The weekly rhythm is simple: one new sound introduced each Monday, revised Tuesday–Thursday, then for spelling, a Friday dictation reviewing the previous week's new words alongside previously learned families. Dictations are at the heart of the programme for spelling.

Because the accompanying reading passages and reading books use only vocabulary already taught, children build fluency and confidence step by step — with no guessing, no gaps, and no getting ahead of what's actually been secured.

This pack includes:

  1. 46 full lesson plans with clear teaching notes and guidance
  2. Word Lists for every lesson
  3. Guidance for teaching reading, spelling, or both together — with notes on how to let a fast-progressing reader move ahead of spelling where needed, without losing the phonics foundation underneath
  4. Phonic flashcards, PDF and PowerPoint (with picture and gesture cues)

Sight word flashcards (we call them 'odd words')

A4-size word list posters (use explained in the manual)

Due to its simplicity, the Reading Made Simple curriculum is suitable for parents helping a child with reading, writing, or both — as well as for teacher intervention, either in school or virtually — and for use with adults or ESL/EFL students.

Before starting, a child should be able to blend 4 sounds, such as n-e-s-t or g-l-a-d.

Because of its highly structured, cumulative nature, Reading Made Simple is suitable for use where other programmes have failed.

The programme is:

  • Loved by home-educators
  • Prized by those with a child with special needs

Look no further — you can teach your child to read and write, using proven methods. There is hope for all!
