Modes have a reputation for being the most confusing topic in guitar. Half of that is deserved — the way they're usually taught is genuinely confusing. The other half isn't. Strip out the complexity most explanations pile on and the underlying theory is straightforward.

The real gap isn't understanding modes. It's understanding them and still not being able to use them. Most resources either bury you in theory before you've played a note, or skip the theory entirely and hand you seven scale patterns to memorise. Neither one gets you playing modally.
