At its heart this is a simple, top down, short row heel sock. A perfect introduction to the world of sock knitting. However, it will also take you further, with instructions for adding stripes and making use of mini skeins and scraps to make some super socks.
Needles: 2.25 mm / US size 1 needles for working in the round on a small circumference.
2.5mm / US size 1.5 needles for working in the round on a small circumference.
Yarn: 100 g sock / 4 ply / fingering weight yarn, 420 m per 100 g.
Sample 1 shown in A little bit Sheepish teal gradient set; 75% wool, 25% nylon; 420 m per 100 g; 20 g per colour.
Sample 2 shown in a random selection of sock yarn leftovers.
Colour variation suggestions:
Simply solid: Use a single colour of sock yarn throughout, ignore any instructions to change colour (100 g).
Points: combine two colours- one for the leg and foot (70 g) and a contrast colour for the cuff, heel and toe sections (30 g). Ignore stripe instructions.
There and back again: Arrange a gradient set with the colours running from mid-light-dark and back again (as shown in the sample). Instructions for working this arrangement are included in the pattern with the following colour names: C1 – light, C2 – mid-light, C3 – mid, C4 – mid-dark, C5 – dark. This also works for any arrangement of five colours you pick (20 g of each; large only- 30 g of C5).
Double stripe: Use two colours (50 g of each) and alternate them as you stripe the socks (bumblebee socks anyone?!)
Funky fraternals: Pick one colour for the cuff, heel and toe sections on both socks (30 g). Work the leg and foot stripes in a random arrangement of mini skeins or leftovers.
The pattern can be used for any colour arrangement of your choice; you will need about 2 g for each stripe and 6 g for the heel. Remember to save enough yarn for the second sock if you want a matching pair!
