This is My Black: Proud Shades of Melanin

************************************************************************************************************************
Born with albinism, a condition that affects the pigment of her skin, Aubree was born a black girl with white skin. Having a lighter hue, blonde hair and green eyes, children treated her differently because of what they believed to be different. From a young age, Aubree was treated different because of the lack of color in her skin, she was ridiculed, teased, bullied, and threatened by her peers. Society was taught that black comes only in certain colors.

By telling her story, Aubree hopes to educate people on the different shades of melanin, especially the lighter shade known as Albino. She will take back her self-esteem from those who nearly drove her to suicide. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and by embracing our differences, Aubree will show others that her identity is deeper than the color of her skin; it’s in her heart and soul.

She must find her inner strength to overcome these obstacles and embrace the proud, black girl she is. Her differences make her stronger, and she must strive to educate her friends on her condition, and how it means to be proud of her heritage.
