When behind the lens, I sometimes set goals for myself. As I sit at my
table, I imagine my backyard being turned into a floral haven for
hummingbirds. I had the time and certainly wanted to put in the
effort. My first attempt was setting up feeders in my dogwood tree in
early spring. As time allowed, I spent my free time staring out the
backdoor window in hopes a hummingbird would pick my yard as one of it's
feeding spots. As the weather warmed up and spring was approaching, I
was gifted with visitors! I spent my entire spring and summer observing
their flight patterns and timing their visits. Both male and females
battling for the feeders and spending time perched on tiny branches. I
decided I was hungry for more goals and decided to incorporate flowers
in my yard. I planted a small, vibrantly colored garden of flora. One
of the best experiences I had was sitting under the tree, I am
approached by a hummingbird who wishes to get some food. They have
hovered by my side and hearing their wings in flight was music to my
ears. I spent a few seconds speaking to them as they become familiar me
in their surroundings. They know I'm there to take care of them. I now
look forward to their annual visits. Nature is amazing!
