This is a pattern for a decorative stocking using the Stranded colourwork knitting technique and with 2 motif to choose from (Tapestry or Stylised). The stocking is knit in the round and from the cuff down through most of the foot. Then the piece is worked flat and shaped by binding off stitches and then sewn together.

Duplicate Stitch and simple embroidery may be used to embellish or highlight any motif you like.

This pattern contains complex colourwork charts and is intended for knitters comfortable using charts and with experience working colourwork flat.

I have also included a small note about working short rows, in place of binding off, to shape the foot. I did not do this on my original sample, but one of the test knitters had beautiful results.

yarn:

2 Ply Jumper Weight by, Jamieson & Smith

Fingering; 100% Shetland; 125yds (115m)/25g

approximate yarn amounts:

Colour A (background) - 300yds / 275m

Colour B (foreground) - 300yds / 275m

needles:

2.25mm (us no 1) circulars 20in/50cm

2.5mm (us no 1.5) circulars 20in/50cm

plus 3rd needle to work 3-needle bind off (this may be a DPN)

gauge:

32 sts x 34 rows = 4in/10cm measured over stranded stockinette on larger needles

Some knitters work stranded and single-coloured at different gauges. Change needles, as needed, to keep gauge the same throughout.

approximate finished size:

18in / 46cm (h) x 8.25in / 21cm (cuff width)

Using larger needles will give you a larger stocking, if desired and will affect yarn amounts.

For example a 30 st gauge will give you a stocking approximately 22.5in / 57cm x 9in / 23cm

additional tools:

needle to weave in ends, st marker
