A War Veteran Holds His Son (a modern Nunc Dimittis) - SATB Choir unaccompanied - by Hugh Levey and Blair H. Smith - 10 copies

A War Veteran Holds His Son and the separately published Mary’s Prayer are intended as contemporary parallels to the traditional choral Nunc Dimittis and Magnificat. They are companion pieces, rather than replacements.

In the original Nunc Dimittis, Simeon responds to the epiphany of his recognition of future salvation, glory and light in holding the child Jesus, whom he had been promised he would meet before he died. A War Veteran Holds His Son is inspired by Simon Weston CBE, veteran of the Falklands War (1982), in which he sustained extensive, severely disfiguring burns to his body and face. In an interview he described his recurring nightmares of an enemy fighter-jet, piloted by a "hooded, flame-eyed demonic figure".

Part of Weston’s emotional recovery was influenced by the birth of his son, an event that brought new meaning to his future, and recalibration of his past. He later met with the Argentine pilot and achieved some reconciliation, “exorcising his ghosts”.

Luke 2:29-32

Isaiah 6:6-7
