Henry Crane wants to make the most realistic robots in the world, but the actual plastic and metal is easy. The hard part is getting a pleasant and reliable personality - getting sued if one of his robots runs amok would ruin him!
The solution is a virtual world where personalities can be generated, trained and assessed and all goes well until a disgruntled employee introduces the first evil among the innocent robots. Rectifying the problem costs Henry Crane time, money, frustration and, in the end, the person dearest to him.
