Anxiety and the Nervous System

You might find this helpful if...

  • you often experience racing thoughts, a tight chest, restlessness, shutdown, or the quiet urge to make yourself small
  • you feel shame about your anxiety, on top of the anxiety itself
  • your alarm system seems to stay switched on long after the danger has passed
  • you notice people-pleasing or fawn patterns in yourself
  • you believe your anxiety is a flaw, a weakness, or evidence that something is wrong with you

This resource won't tell you what to do

Anxiety does not arrive to punish us. It is the nervous system doing what it was built to do, which is to keep us safe. This is not a resource about getting rid of anxiety. Instead, it gently helps you to:

  • understand anxiety as a protective response of the nervous system, rather than a flaw
  • recognise the five survival states: fight, flight, freeze, flop, and fawn
  • notice where anxiety lives in your body, and which survival state tends to show up
  • see how shame appears alongside anxiety, and amplifies it
  • move toward the honour response, meeting anxiety with dignity rather than judgement

There is no right way to complete it, and no expectation that everything changes today. It is an invitation to meet anxiety with honesty, curiosity, and authentic self-honour.

What's included

  • Printable A4 PDF resource and worksheet (Print version, for handwriting)
  • The mechanics of anxiety explained in accessible language, including the five survival states
  • A reflective worksheet with six therapeutic prompts

This resource may be helpful if you're experiencing...

  • anxiety
  • chronic stress
  • a dysregulated nervous system
  • shame around your responses
  • trauma-related activation
  • people-pleasing and fawn patterns
  • the quieter ways anxiety can remain present in daily life

This resource is not...

  • a substitute for therapy
  • a crisis resource
  • a diagnostic tool
  • something you have to complete all at once
  • about fixing, removing, or pushing away anxiety, or regulating in a particular way

You are welcome to work through it at your own pace, return to it later, or use it alongside a counsellor if that feels helpful.

Created with compassion

Every Place to Talk Therapies resource is built around the same belief:

Change rarely begins with finding the perfect answer. More often, it begins with enough safety to become curious about your own experience. That means there are no perfect answers inside these pages, only gentle invitations to notice, reflect, and understand yourself a little more.
