UK Edition: Reading a Menu: Café and Takeaway Prices in £, SEND, KS4 and Post-16
A menu reading and money set for KS3, KS4 and post 16 SEND learners, using three UK style menus: a café with a Full English and a children's menu, a takeaway pizza menu with sizes, deals and delivery, and a burger bar board with meals and item only prices.
Why I made this
Ordering food is one of the first places young people use reading and money out in public, and one of the first places they get nervous. If a learner can find the right section, read the price and add two items up before they get to the counter, ordering gets a lot easier. These menus look like the ones they will see on the high street, so the practice carries over.
What's included
• Teacher page with a short note on the UK details
• Words to know: 10 key words with pictures (menu, price, section, side, meal, swap, takeaway, deal, order, total)
• 3 practice menus: The Maple Café, Tony's Pizza takeaway and Lakeview Burger Bar, all in £ with VAT included
• 12 Level A questions with pictures and three choices
• The same 12 questions at Level B, with open answers and room to show working
• A real life task: plan and price a lunch with £15, then practise ordering out loud ("eat in or take away?")
• Answer key that shows where to find every answer
Two levels, same questions
Level A suits learners who need visual support and choices. Level B suits learners ready to write and show working. Because the questions match, the whole group can work from the same documents and go through the answers together.
How I use it
Do Level A as a group with the menu on the board, then let learners work through Level B in pairs. The £15 lunch task is the one to take out into the community: price it in class, then go and order it for real on a café visit and check the change.
Who it is for
KS4, sixth form, FE college and post 16 SEND groups, learners on SEN Support, and supported internship or independent living programmes.
Please note
All cafés, prices and phone numbers are made up. Prices are realistic for 2026 but will not match any real shop.
