The 2 Position Guitar Chord System: Two Grips per Chord, All Over the Neck
Most chord books give you hundreds of shapes and no way to connect them. You learn a C7 here and a C7 there, and none of it tells you where the next chord is or what scale you’re in while you play it.
This book works the other way round. Every chord gets two grips, and both come straight out of the two positions of the 2 Position Guitar Scale System. Position 2 puts the root on the bottom. Position 1 puts the 3rd on the bottom. That rule holds for triads, sixths, sus chords and seventh chords, so you’re not memorising shapes. You’re applying one idea to every chord type.
Because the grips come from the same positions as your scales and arpeggios, the scale notes are always right there under your fingers. Chords, fills and lines all come from one map, and you can play through a whole progression without moving your hand.
You don’t need the scale book. The two positions are explained from scratch at the start, including the one adjustment the guitar forces on you when a shape crosses onto the B string.
What’s inside
- Two grips for every chord: major, minor, diminished, augmented, sixths, sus, and all the common seventh chords
- Rootless Position 1 sevenths, which are what you play when the bass player has the root
- Extensions built by keeping three strings and moving one note
- Each grip shown inside the scale it comes from, so you can see your fills and connecting notes
- Scale pairs as chord colours: one note changes, and so does the chord
- How the positions interlock and cascade across the neck
- Stacking grips into full six-string chords
- Progressions played in one area of the neck, switching between positions as you go
- A reference chapter listing every chord type, with the scales that contain it
There’s no notation. Everything is on fretboard diagrams labelled with intervals, so it works in every key. Where the system has limits, such as diminished chords and half-diminished voicings, the book says so and shows you what to do instead.
