Memories

Someday, he may not remember whether they caught a single fish.

He may not remember what they packed for lunch, how many times his line became tangled, or the stories his father told while they sat together on that old wooden dock.

But he will remember being there.

He will remember the warmth of the setting sun across the lake, the mountains in the distance, the dog curled up beside them, and the feeling that—for those few precious hours—there was nowhere else in the world they needed to be.

Because the best memories are rarely made from grand occasions. They are created in the ordinary moments we almost don’t notice while they’re happening.

A fishing pole.

An old dock.

A faithful dog.

A father and his son.

Years from now, the little boy may return to a lake like this with a child of his own. And as the sun begins to set, perhaps he’ll smile and realize that what his father gave him that evening wasn’t a lesson in fishing.

It was a memory.

And some memories never leave us.
