In The Spirit of Man, Michael E.B. Maher explores the nature, origin, and function of the human spirit as distinct from the soul and body. He explains that every person is born spiritually alive, with a spirit from God, but dies spiritually upon first wilful sin (typically around age thirteen). Salvation through Jesus Christ brings new birth—the spirit is made alive again, becoming incorruptible and partaking of the divine nature. This born-again spirit cannot sin, possesses full understanding of God’s Word, and serves as the primary means by which the Holy Spirit guides the believer.

Maher distinguishes between the spirit’s inherent knowledge and the mind’s need for renewal. He emphasizes spiritual growth through feeding on Scripture (reading, teaching, meditation), acting on God’s Word, and praying in tongues, which edifies the spirit. The born-again spirit produces the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, etc.) and enables true worship “in spirit and truth.” The book also contrasts the conditions of spiritual life (believers) and spiritual death (unbelievers), noting that the latter are separated from God, possess a sinful nature, and face eternal judgment unless they are born again.
