When I first discovered what blockchain is, I was amazed at the brilliance of the technology. And then I thought, “This is so ingenious, beyond human abilities. Maybe the aliens had given us this technology.”

Cryptocurrencies have created a paradigm shift in the way we look at money. What began as a technical experiment for enthusiasts (in the beginning), cryptocurrencies have gradually become an exchange tool used by millions of people. Since 2010, when one bitcoin’s worth was a little less than half a cent, there are more than 4,500 cryptocurrencies in existence today and the market is expected to climb to over 39 billion U.S. dollars in size by 2025.

The explosive popularity of cryptocurrencies has increased scrutiny from governments and the regulation is clearly evolving. Each country approaches crypto and blockchain differently.

Following its Digital Finance Strategy, on September 24, 2020 the European Commission adopted a new Digital Finance Package, including proposals for a Regulation of Markets in crypto-assets (“MiCA”).

The regulation is intended to provide certainty to the industry and be implemented in a consistent way throughout the EU. MiCA introduces requirements for the issuance, offering and marketing of crypto assets, the terms of operation of cryptoasset service providers and the prevention of market abuse, consumer protection and AML prevention.

The Proposal currently is in the process of negotiation.
