In 1982, four years after graduating from pharmacy school, Marla Ahlgrimm was faced with a dilemma.  Her boss told her she was wasting her time with numerous female patients that had hormonal fluctuations throughout the month. Although this malady called PMS had been recognized in Europe as a real condition by Katerina Dalton, M.D., and Marla had gone over to learn from her, the U.S. medical community was slow to adopt this therapy. Marla had been working with a local physician to treat these women with customized doses of progesterone and was seeing results. When her boss told her that these female patients were neurotic and just needed to be on Valium, she knew what decision she had to make. Against all odds, including a disbelieving medical community in the US at that time, she established Madison Pharmacy Associates, the first pharmacy to exclusively provide compounded low-dose, natural hormone therapy to manage PMS.
