This song (and its companion My Prime of Youth) is taken from my song cycle "This Too Shall Pass", composed for soprano and piano in 2009. The four songs in the cycle set elegies by different poets – Since I Lost You by D.H. Lawrence, Speak Ye Stones by Goethe, My Prime of Youth by Chidiock Tichborne, and I Shall Know Why by Emily Dickinson. The sombre yet warm tone of the clarinet in its lower and middle registers imbues these songs with the meaning left behind – even as the words have been removed.
