All that is beautiful began life as a musical response to the war-time diaries of architect Harry Seidler. The entry that inspired the title was written on June 26^th 1940 :

Once again I was very depressed - my position seems more dismal from day to day. If it's true about Canada I'll never get back to Cambridge, at least not in the next couple of years. That means forgetting my happy life at Lady MacAlister's... above all forgetting all that is beautiful. When I think about all of this I could cry.

Since its inception, the music has moved beyond the initial spark of inspiration to become a contemplation of melancholic sweetness, longing, memory, and hope.
