Safe Shores Trumpet Trio
by Eddie Lewis
Safe Shores is a trumpet trio composition in five-eight time. It begins as a lament then transitions to another one of my signature call and response sections.
The call and response sections in my compositions are inspired by the many years I worked as one of the top salsa trumpet players in Houston. The first time I applied the “montuno” form to one of my compositions, I realized that it also helps the individual players to rest. So I have been doing it that way ever since. At least two-thirds of my compositions utilize this technique.
The skill level for Safe Shores is intermediate. On our skill level system, it falls under the Trumpet Apprentice level (our fourth of seven levels). The key is B flat (A flat concert). The highest note in the first part is A above the staff. If the students have not done any work with five-eight time, then learning the rhythms may involve a little work.
