We have put together a package of activities to help bring Have a Heart Day into the intermediate classroom and spread awareness of Have a Heart Day and Shannen's Dream. Have a Heart Day is a youth led reconciliation movement, and it all started because of Shannen Koostachin. Shannen, who was from the Attawapiskat First Nation, spoke up for First Nations kids living on reserves across Canada. She noticed that schools on reserves didn't have the same good conditions as those off reserves. So, Shannen and her classmates got people all over Canada to write to their local governments. They wanted everyone to know about the tough challenges Indigenous kids were facing in getting a good education. Now, 'Have a Heart Day' keeps Shannen's spirit alive. Every year, students continue the push for fairness and equality. They're inspired by Shannen's dedication, working for a better future where all First Nations kids have the same chances. 'Have a Heart Day' is about young people making a difference and standing up for what's right.
